New Patient vs. Established Patient
New
Established
According to CPT definition, a new patient is "one who has NOT received any professional services from the physician/qualified health care professional or another physician/qualified health care professional of the same exact specialty and subspecialty who belongs to the same group practice, within the past three years."
According to CPT definition, an established patient is "one who HAS received any professional services from the physician/qualified health care professional or another physician/qualified health care professional of the same exact specialty and subspecialty who belongs to the same group practice, within the past three years."
NOTE: The interpretation of lab work or diagnostic testing (in the absence of an E/M or other face-to-face service) does not affect the determination of a new or established patient.
