ORIGINAL MEDICARE
What is known as "Original Medicare" is administered directly by the federal government and is comprised of two parts: Part A and Part B.
Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) covers Medicare inpatient care, including care received while at the following places:

a hospital
-
a skilled nursing facility
-
home health
-
hospice care.

Medicare Part A is free if you have worked and paid Social Security taxes for at least 40 calendar quarters, which is 10 years. If you have worked and paid taxes for less time, you will pay a monthly premium.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers most hospital outpatient services including the following:

medically necessary doctors’ services

preventive care
-
durable medical equipment
-
laboratory tests, x-rays

mental health care
-
some home health
-
ambulance services

​​​Medicare Part B is not free, and requires a monthly premium for this coverage.
